New Delhi, Apr 9,2025: Tahawwur Rana, one of the masterminds of the deadly 2008 Mumbai terror attacks, is being extradited to India after he exhausted his legal options in the US, according to news reports.
The Pakistani-Canadian national, 64, was an associate of the Pakistan-based Islamist terrorist group, the Lashkar-e-Taiba (LeT). The US Supreme Court on Monday rejected his plea against his extradition to India to face trial, news reports said.
Earlier this year too, the US Supreme Court had rejected his plea against his extradition.
He was incarcerated in the US Metropolitan Detention Center in Los Angeles, for 14 years. His extradition to India was approved in 2023 by the US Supreme Court.
The extradition of Rana had also been announced by President Donald Trump who had dubbed him “a very evil man”, in a joint press conference with Prime Minister Narendra Modi in Washington, in February this year.
As per news reports, a multi-agency team from India has gone to the US and all paperwork and legalities are being completed with the US authorities required to facilitate the extradition process.
Rana, who had personally conducted reconnaissance and scouted Mumbai for picking the locations of the terror strikes ahead of the terror attacks, had also directly facilitated fellow jihadi David Coleman Headley—also known as Dawood Gilani—to travel to India using a Pakistani-American passport. The purpose was to identify potential targets for the Mumbai terror attacks being plotted by LeT in coordination with several officers of the Pakistan Army and Pakistan’s Inter Services Intelligence (ISI).
Gaza City, Mar 18,2025: The death toll from the Israeli strike on Gaza has risen to at least 342 people, including women and children, while hundreds others have been injured, reports says.
Tuesday’s attack took place across Gaza, including in Khan Younis and Rafah in southern Gaza, Gaza City in the north, and central areas like Deir el-Balah.
Many of those killed in the attacks were children, Gaza’s Ministry of Health said.
Earlier on Tuesday, the Israel Defence Forces (IDF) said that it was carrying out massive airstrikes on Hamas targets in the Gaza Strip.
Axios political reporter Barak Ravid said, citing Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu’s office, that the Jewish state had decided to resume military operations against Hamas after the movement rejected US proposals for a ceasefire.
Tehran, Mar 11,2025: Iran has not received any letter from the United States on negotiations about the country’s nuclear program, Iranian Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei said Monday.
In an interview with Fox Business Network on Friday, Trump said he wanted to negotiate with Iran on the nuclear issue and had sent a letter to the country’s leadership.
Baghaei said Iran had never closed the door to negotiations. “However, we do not accept a negotiation proposal that is based on intimidation and threat and basically do not consider it as a negotiation,” he said.
He warned that threatening to use force is considered “prohibited and a criminal action” under international law. By claiming “all options are on the table,” Washington is actually threatening Iran, he said, referring to remarks by Trump’s national security advisor Michael Waltz in February.
Meanwhile, Iran’s permanent mission to the United Nations in New York also announced Monday that the country had not received any letter from Trump.
Iran signed a nuclear deal, formally known as the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action, with six major countries — Britain, China, France, Germany, Russia, the United States — in July 2015, accepting restrictions on its nuclear program in return for sanctions relief.
However, during Trump’s first term of office, the United States withdrew from the deal in May 2018 and reinstated sanctions, prompting Iran to scale back some of its nuclear commitments.
Efforts to revive the nuclear deal have not achieved substantial progress. Iranian officials have repeatedly stressed that the country would not negotiate with the United States under pressure and sanctions.
Gaza, Mar 9,2025: Hamas said on Saturday that there were positive signs regarding negotiations for the second phase of the ceasefire agreement in Gaza.
Hamas spokesman Abdul Latif Al-Qanou said in a press statement that “the efforts of Egyptian and Qatari mediators are ongoing to finalise the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and initiate negotiations for its second phase, with positive indicators in that direction.”
He emphasised Hamas’s readiness to engage in these negotiations in a manner that meets the demands of the Palestinian people.
The spokesman also called for intensified efforts to provide humanitarian relief to the Gaza Strip and lift the Israeli blockade.
Meanwhile, Taher al-Nunu, an advisor to Hamas’s political bureau chief, announced that a Hamas delegation, led by Mohammad Darwish, head of the movement’s leadership council, had arrived in Cairo.
According to al-Nunu, the delegation will hold talks with Egyptian officials regarding the outcomes of a recent Arab summit and ways to implement them.
Discussions will also focus on the necessity of moving forward with the second phase of the ceasefire agreement, al-Nunu said.
A Hamas delegation arrived in Cairo on Friday for talks on implementing terms of the Gaza ceasefire deal and pushing forward negotiations on its second phase, Egypt’s State Information Service said in a statement.
A three-phase Gaza ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, brokered by Egypt, Qatar, and the United States, took effect on January 19. The negotiations for the second phase of the deal remain stalled after the initial 42-day phase expired on March 1.
Egypt has been intensifying diplomatic efforts to achieve a Gaza ceasefire and advance the strip’s reconstruction. On Tuesday, Egypt hosted an emergency Arab summit and proposed a Gaza non-displacement reconstruction plan valued at 53 billion U.S. dollars.
Kochi (Kerala), March 6,2025: The CPI(M) state conference kicked off with the inauguration of the delegates’ meeting presided by Senior leader and Politburo Coordinator Prakash Karat.
In his speech, Prakash Karat sharply criticized the Modi government’s middle east policy. “Narendra Modi government supported Israel in the war, Modi government allowed export of weapons. This is unprecedented for India. Traditionally, since independence, India supports Palestine. Modi aligned with the US,” Karat remarked.
He also addressed the issue of the quadrilateral alliance, stating, “The last thing the quadrilateral alliance, the only purpose of America is to use a security alliance and to use it against China.”
Tehran, Mar 6,2025: Iran’s Foreign Ministry Spokesman Esmaeil Baghaei on Wednesday rejected “baseless” claims by British officials that Tehran seeks to threaten Britain’s national security.
He made the refutation in a statement released by the ministry in response to anti-Iran statements by British Security Minister Dan Jarvis in an address on Tuesday to Britain’s parliament.
Jarvis said he “will place the whole of the Iranian state, including its intelligence services, the Islamic Revolution Guards Corps and Ministry of Intelligence,” into the enhanced tier of the upcoming Foreign Influence Registration Scheme, which is designed for protection against covert foreign influence.
Baghaei called on Britain to stop its “unconstructive” approaches towards Iran and the West Asia region, reaffirming Iran’s commitment to the United Nations Charter and international law, especially the principles of mutual respect, non-interference in other countries’ internal affairs and respect for international law and regulations.
Baghaei urged British officials to abandon their “incorrect policies against Iranian people and stop promoting and encouraging terrorism,” “instead of insisting upon their confrontational policies and leveling baseless accusations against Iran.”
