Washington DC , December 3 ,2020: US President Donald Trump’s administration is making progress on its intent to reduce the number of US troops in Afghanistan to 2,500 by January 15, Joint Chiefs of Staff Chairman Mark Milley said on Wednesday.
“We’re in the process of executing that decision right now,” Milley said during a virtual panel discussion at the Brookings Institution.
Resolute Support Mission Commander Gen. Austin Miller and Central Command head Gen. Frank McKenzie have made recommendations to acting Defense Secretary Christopher Miller regarding which US bases in Afghanistan should be closed.
Milley said the Acting Defense Secretary has approved the base closures but declined to reveal details about which ones will be closed.
In early November, Miller announced plans to reduce by January 15 the number of US troops in Afghanistan and Iraq to 2,500 in each country.
Munich [Germany], December 3 ,2020: Refuting the claims made by the Chinese Mission to the United Nations, a pro-Uyghurs body on Wednesday slammed Beijing for asserting that it protects cultural customs and relics of ethnic minorities.
“Seriously? China claims that it ‘protects the cultural heritage of ethnic minority groups’ while engaging in a systematic campaign to destroy the cultural heritage of #Uyghurs. Since 2017, for example, China has demolished: 65 per cent of mosques and 30 per cent of important Islamic sacred sites,” World Uyghur Congress tweeted.
This comes after the Chinese Mission to the United Nations on Twitter said that ethnic minority cultures are an integral part of Chinese culture, adding that cultural customs and relics of ethnic minorities are protected as Chinese cultural heritages.
“Ethnic minority cultures are an integral part of Chinese culture. Cultural customs and relics of ethnic minorities are protected as Chinese cultural heritages. We have saved 1 million ancient classics from distinction. We will continue to protect our common cultural wealth,” the Chinese Mission to the UN said in a tweet.
Another pro-Uyghurs body — Campaign For Uyghurs also rebuked Beijing saying that the Chinese regime has been systematically erasing Uyghur and Turkic culture.
“The Chinese regime has been systematically erasing Uyghur and Turkic culture, orchestrating a modern-day Uyghur Genocide. The destruction of mosques and homes across East Turkistan is part of the regime’s bigger plan,” said Campaign For Uyghurs.
Uyghurs Activist Rushan Abbas also condemned China. “Common cultural wealth”? These cultures are distinct, not a part of #Chinese culture. You are doing your best to erase all culture outside of dancing that you can use in propaganda videos. You treat #Uyghurs as dancing monkeys!” said Abbas.
A sizeable Muslim population in Xinjiang has been incarcerating in an expanding network of “political re-education” camps, according to US officials and UN experts.
However, China regularly denies such mistreatment and says the camps provide vocational training. People in the internment camps are reportedly subjected to forced political indoctrination, torture, beatings and denial of food and medicine, besides being prohibited from practising their religion or speaking their language.
Paris, Dec 3,2020: France and the United Nations vowed Wednesday to keep providing humanitarian aid to Lebanon but urged the country’s leaders to form a new government as a political deadlock in Beirut has blocked billions of dollars in assistance for the cash-strapped country hit by multiple crises.
A meeting organised via videoconference by the U.N. and France was the second since the disastrous August 4 explosion that destroyed Beirut’s port and wrecked large parts of the capital.
The blast, which killed over 200 people and wounded thousands, was caused by the detonation of nearly 3,000 tons of ammonium nitrates that had been stored unsafely at a port warehouse for years.
The explosion came amid an unprecedented financial meltdown worsened by pandemic-related closures that has brought soaring inflation, poverty and unemployment.
French President Emmanuel Macron and U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres announced the creation of a fund handled by the World Bank, the U.N. and the European Union to provide support for Lebanon, including food, healthcare, education and the reconstruction of the Port of Beirut.
We can, together, help the Lebanese people move beyond the emergency phase and onto the path for longer-term recovery and reconstruction,” Guterres said.
The plan also calls for a targeted set of reforms, which are essential to facilitate recovery and reconstruction,” he added.
Macron said Wednesday’s conference would make it possible to complete the emergency response and provide an early recovery response.
But the French leader warned that the promised aid won’t replace the commitment of Lebanese political forces and institutions to form a government as quickly as possible and implement a roadmap for reforms without which the (long-term) international economic help won’t be released.”
In a dire report published Tuesday, the World Bank said Lebanon’s economy faces an arduous and prolonged depression, with real GPD projected to plunge by nearly 20 per cent because its politicians refuse to implement reforms that would speed up the country’s recovery.
Macron, whose country once governed Lebanon as a protectorate, supported pushing ahead with an aid program despite frustration with the Lebanese ruling class. Lebanon’s leaders continue to resist reforms and have been unable to form a government after the last one resigned in the wake of the explosion.

New Delhi, Dec 1 ,2020: Maintaining that the Government has never spoke about vaccinating the entire country against Covid-19, Health Secretary Rajesh Bhushan on Tuesday said it was important that scientific issues should be discussed based on factual information only.
“I just want to make this clear that the government has never spoken about vaccinating the entire country. It’s important that we discuss such scientific issues, based on factual information only,” the Health Secretary replied whem asked how much time it would take to vaccinate the entire country during a press briefing in the national capital.
“If we’re able to vaccinate a critical mass of people and break the virus transmission, then we may not have to vaccinate the entire population,” added Dr Balram Bhargava, Indian Council of Medical Research Director-General, who was present.
The officials said vaccination would depend on the efficacy of the vaccine and our purpose is to break the chain of Covid-19 transmission.
To another query, Mr Bhushan replied that there was an inherent issue of vaccine hesitancy among a certain section of people and said, it was the collective responsibility of the Union Government, state governments, media, NGOs, vaccine manufacturers, pharma companies and other stakeholders to educate people and create awareness about the effectiveness and safety of vaccines. In this connection, he stated that the Health Ministry was preparing a detailed guideline which would be shared with the states shortly, and one of the chapters in it dealt with communication addressing issues of vaccine safety.
