WASHINGTON, Sept 13,2025: Group of Seven nations’ finance ministers discussed in a call on Friday further sanctions on Russia and possible tariffs on countries that they consider “enabling” its war in Ukraine, as the U.S. called on its allies to impose tariffs on purchasers of Russian oil.
Canadian Finance Minister Francois-Philippe Champagne chaired the G7 meeting, which was held to discuss further measures to increase pressure on Russia to end its war against Ukraine, according to a statement from Canada, the head of the rolling G7 presidency.
The ministers agreed to speed up discussions to use frozen Russian assets to fund Ukraine’s defense, and discussed a “wide range of possible economic measures to increase pressure on Russia, including further sanctions and trade measures, such as tariffs, on those enabling Russia’s war effort,” the statement said.
U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent told finance ministers during the call that they should join the U.S. in imposing tariffs on countries that purchase oil from Russia, Bessent and U.S. Trade Representative Jamieson Greer said in a separate statement following the meeting.
“Only with a unified effort that cuts off the revenues funding Putin’s war machine at the source will we be able to apply sufficient economic pressure to end the senseless killing,” Bessent and Greer said.
Bessent and Greer welcomed commitments made during the call to increase sanctions pressure and explore using immobilized Russian sovereign assets to benefit Ukraine’s defense, according to the joint statement.
Earlier in the day, a U.S. Treasury spokesperson called on G7 and European Union allies to impose “meaningful tariffs” on goods from China and India to pressure them to halt their purchases of Russian oil.
President Donald Trump has imposed an extra 25% tariff on imports from India to pressure New Delhi to halt its purchases of discounted Russian crude oil, bringing total punitive duties on Indian goods to 50% and souring trade negotiations between the two democracies.
But Trump has refrained from imposing additional tariffs on Chinese imports over China’s purchases of Russian oil, as his administration navigates a delicate trade truce with Beijing.
Bessent is due to travel to Madrid on Friday for another round of talks with his Chinese counterpart, Vice Premier He Lifeng, that will cover trade issues, Washington’s demands for Chinese-owned TikTok to divest its U.S. operations, and anti-money laundering issues.
New Delhi, July 31,2025: Day after announcing 25 percent tariff with ‘’penalty’’ against India for
buying military equipment and energy from Russia, US President Donald Trump today said a trade deal with Pakistan had been concluded and both countries (India and Russia) could take their ‘’dead economies’’ down together.
He said the US had just concluded a trade deal with Pakistan where Pakistan and US could work together on developing their massive oil reserves and may be they (Pakistan) will sell their oil to India.
‘’We have just concluded a deal with the country of Pakistan whereby Pakistan and the United States will work together on developing their massive oil reserves. We are in the process of choosing the oil company that will lead this partnership. Who knows may be they’ll be selling oil to India some day.’’
He said he does not care what India does with Russia. ‘’They can take their dead economies down together, for all I care,’’ he said in a series of tweets on his social media platform.
President Trump had yesterday announced on Truth Social that 25 per cent tariff would be imposed on India along with ‘’penalty’’ from August one for buying military equipment and energy from Russia.
‘’All things are not good! India will therefore be paying a tariff of 25 percent plus a penalty starting August one,’’ he said. Describing India as ‘’our friend,’’ he said US had done relatively little business with India because their (India’s) tariffs are too high.
Commenting on Trump’s tariffs an official spokesman here said the Government attaches utmost importance to protecting and promoting the welfare of our farmers, entrepreneurs and MSMEs and will take all necessary steps to secure our national interest.
‘’The Government will take all steps necessary to secure our national interest, as has been the case with other trade agreements including the latest Comprehensive Economic and Trade Agreement with the UK,’’ the spokesman said.
He said the Government had taken note of the statement by the US President on bilateral trade. The Government is studying its implications.
The spokesman said India and the US have been engaged in negotiations on concluding a fair, balanced and mutually beneficial bilateral trade agreement over the last few months and India remains committed to that objective.
Trump said he is ‘’very busy’’ in the White House working on Trade Deals and he had spoken to the leaders of many countries all of whom wanted make the United States ‘’Extremely Happy.’’
In another tweet he said the US has a ‘’massive trade deficit with India.’’ The US had done very little business with India, their tariffs are too high among the highest in the world.
‘’Russia and the US do almost no business together. Let’s keep it that way,’’ he said.

Berlin, Feb 3,2025: U.S. President Donald Trump’s tariff move against Canada, Mexico and China has sparked criticism and concern in Germany.
On Saturday, Trump ordered to impose a 25-percent tariff on imports from Mexico and Canada, and a 10-percent tariff on Chinese goods. He also signaled that the European Union (EU) could be next, citing the bloc’s persistent trade surplus with the U.S.
While reaffirming Germany’s commitment to economic ties with the U.S., German Chancellor Olaf Scholz emphasized that the first priority should be “not to divide up the world with many tariff barriers.”
“Tariffs have never been a good idea to resolve trade policy conflicts,” Chairman of the German Christian Democratic Union Friedrich Merz said, warning of backlash in the U.S. as rising import costs would fuel inflation and hit American consumers directly.
Trump’s move would come at a high cost for Americans, Jandura said, adding, “The losers are always end consumers, who will feel the price increase at the checkout.”
German companies are also bracing for the impact, as many supply the U.S. market from Mexico, particularly in the automotive industry.
According to the German newspaper Handelsblatt, Mexico has been Germany’s most important investment location in Latin America for years, with total investments exceeding 45 billion U.S. dollars since the 2000s.
According to the credit rating agency S&P, Canada and Mexico produce around 5.3 million passenger cars annually, with approximately 70 percent destined for the U.S.
Importers are likely to pass most, if not all, of the price increase to consumers, S&P noted, warning that the additional costs would further strain affordability in the U.S. auto market.
New Delhi, Jan 22,2025: The Union Cabinet chaired by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday approved minimum support price (MSP) of raw jute for marketing season 2025-26 at Rs 5,650 per quintal, an increase of Rs 315 per quintal over previous marketing season.
The hike in raw jute MSP ensures return of 66.8% over all India weighted average cost of production.
“The government has increased the MSP of raw jute from Rs 2,400 per quintal in 2014-15 to Rs 5,650 per quintal in 2025-26, registering a 2.35 times increase,” a government statement said.
Briefing media on Cabinet decisions, Union Commerce and Industry Minister Piyush Goyal said that the Union Cabinet also approved continuation of the government’s flagship National health Mission (NHM) for another five years.
Goyal noted that the NHM had met historic targets over the years.
The NHM was launched in 2005 with the objective of building public health systems to provide accessible, affordable and quality health care to the rural population, especially the vulnerable groups, up to the District Hospitals (DH) level.
The implementation strategy of Ministry of Health and Family Welfare under NHM is to provide financial and technical support to States/Union Territories (UTs) enabling them to provide accessible, affordable, accountable, and effective healthcare upto District Hospitals (DHs), especially to the poor and vulnerable sections of the population.
As per official release, the NHM has engaged over 12 lakh additional healthcare workers between FY 2021-24. Also, 220 crore Covid-19 vaccine doses were administered nationwide under the mission.

Kathmandu, June 29,2024: Three months after Indians were allowed to make payments in Nepal using their mobile phones, Nepal Rastra Bank (NRB) announced that Nepali citizens can now utilise a Quick Response (QR) code payment system in India, according to media reports.
In a circular released on Thursday, Nepal Rastra Bank permitted merchant payments in India and Bhutan using QR codes as well as other payment methods such as e-banking, interbank payments, and mobile banking, The Kathmandu Post reported.
Nepal Rastra Bank has set a daily transaction restriction for merchant payments of Rs 15,000 or Rs 100,000 per month. This refers to payments made by Nepali citizens to Indian merchants, specifically for goods and services.
Bhutan’s central bank has issued a circular allowing for such payments.
Following this regulation amendment, Nepalese payment system operators want to launch these services in India soon.
Moreover, the Nepal Rastra Bank has ordered that Nepali enterprises involved in digital cross-border payment systems seek prior approval from the central bank before entering into agreements or signing memoranda of understanding with overseas partners.
This regulatory framework is intended to regulate and facilitate secure cross-border transactions while guaranteeing compliance with national financial legislation.
“We were initially allowed to receive payments from Indian citizens using QR codes in Nepal. Now, with the new provision, banking and financial institutions associated with Fonepay can enable payments using QR codes through their mobile banking apps in India,” The Kathmandu Post quoted Paras Kunwar, Chief Operating Officer (COO) of Fonepay as saying.
“We are on track to soon offer this service for Nepalis in India. Apart from some minor documentation, we are technically prepared,” Kunwar added.
Starting March 1, Indians were able to make payments in Nepal using their mobile phones, marking a big step forward in cross-border digital payments between Nepal and India.
This change is beneficial to students and individuals travelling to India for medical treatment. Fonepay Payment Service in Nepal has teamed with India’s NPCI International Payments to offer a cross-border payment service based on QR codes.
The collaboration intends to make transactions between the two countries more convenient and secure.
According to officials, Nepal’s central bank has introduced a retail payment switch to facilitate person-to-person transactions within the country. Nepal Clearing House, a public limited company, is authorised to operate through this retail payment switch.
Due to difficulties in establishing the National Payment Switch, the central bank has set up a retail switch exclusively for inter-country payments that uses a QR code method.
Laxmi Prasad Prasai, director of Nepal Rastra Bank’s payment department, acknowledged that the national payment switch may take longer to be fully operational. He emphasised that once completed, the national payment switch will integrate and streamline the routing and settlement of retail transactions, ensuring interoperability across various payment methods within Nepal.
The new guidelines now allow Nepali traders to take payments for the sale of products and services via QR codes and other digital payment methods that use Indian payment instruments, the report said.
