Moscow, Oct 3,2024: Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban has threatened to send illegal migrants to the center of Brussels unless the European Union stops pressuring Budapest and reimburses the costs of protecting the EU’s external borders.
“If Brussels continues to insist on its decision to punish us for defending the borders of the EU, they can get what they want. We will transport the illegal migrants who are banging on Hungary’s door to the main square in Brussels,” Orban said on X on Wednesday.
In September, Hungary and the Netherlands requested exemption from EU migration and asylum rules. However, the European Commission said member states cannot withdraw because the asylum law is binding. Hungary also said it was ready to file a lawsuit against the European Commission if it refuses to reimburse Budapest for the costs of protecting EU borders from illegal migrants.
After the European 2015 migration crisis, Hungary started to implement strict migration and asylum rules, which caused a lot of criticism in the EU. Since 2015, five infringement procedures relating to asylum policies have been opened by the European Commission against Hungary.
Kolkata, Oct 1,2024: The CBI on Tuesday arrested former Education Minister Partha Chatterjee in relation to the alleged primary schools’ teachers recruitment irregularities across the state, official sources said.
The Central Bureau of Investigation, also probing the alleged teachers recruitment irregularities, along with the Enforcement Directorate, “shone arrest” of Partha Chatterjee, who has been admitted to the jail hospital since Monday night, sources added.
The special CBI court in the city was also informed of the latest development of the arrest of the former education minister, along with Ayan Sil in the case as they were produced and the court has granted the application.
The ED on July 22, 2022 had arrested Chatterjee in the alleged teachers recruitment scam, along with her close associate Arpita Mukherjee on July 27 and seized nearly Rs 50 crore from Arpita’s two residences at Tollygunj and Belgharia.
Meanwhile, the Supreme Court called for the Enforcement Directorate’s response to Partha Chatterjee’s bail plea relating to the cash-for-jobs scam, a separate report said.
The former education minister was arrested in 2022 for irregularities in SSC teacher recruitment.
Bengaluru, Sep 25,2024: A Karnataka special court on Wednesday directed the Lokayukta to conduct an inquiry into allegations of irregularities in the Mysuru Urban Development Authority (MUDA) allotments to people linked to Chief Minister Siddaramaiah’s family.
The Lokayukta has been instructed to submit its findings within three months.
This ruling follows the Karnataka High Court’s dismissal of Siddaramaiah’s plea against the governor’s August 16 order which sanctioned an investigation under Section 17A of the Prevention of Corruption (PC) Act, 1988.
The governor’s approval was prompted by complaints from activists S P Pradeep Kumar, T J Abraham, and Snehamayi Krishna, who accused the chief minister of benefiting from the illegal allotment of valuable MUDA plots.
The case revolves around the alleged illegal allocation of 14 replacement plots worth Rs 56 crore, given in exchange for 3 acres and 16 gunte of land from survey number 464 at Kesare village in Mysuru. The complaint alleges that Siddaramaiah used his influence to manipulate MUDA officials into approving this transaction, resulting in substantial financial benefits.
The activists approached the governor in mid-2023, seeking permission to investigate and prosecute the Chief Minister. Following their request, the governor authorised the investigation on August 17.
However, Siddaramaiah challenged this decision in the Karnataka High Court on August 19, seeking a stay on the governor’s order. His counsel argued for an injunction, while the opposing counsel objected.
The High Court’s response affirms the Governor’s permission for a preliminary investigation, indicating that the case merits further scrutiny. As the inquiry proceeds, the political and legal implications of this ruling are expected to resonate throughout Karnataka’s political arena.
BEIRUT/JERUSALEM, Sept 24,2024: Israel struck Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and the Iran-backed group attacked military facilities in northern Israel on Tuesday, increasing fears of a full-blown conflict after Lebanon suffered its deadliest day in decades.
Israel’s military said it hit dozens of Hezbollah targets overnight, a day after carrying out airstrikes against the armed group which Lebanese authorities said killed nearly 500 people and sent tens of thousands fleeing for safety.
“In the last hour, warplanes bombed Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon, including missile launchers, military buildings, and buildings where weapons were stored,” Israeli army spokesperson Avichay Adraee posted on X.
Hezbollah said it targeted several Israeli military targets overnight including an explosives factory 60 km (37 miles) into Israel, which it attacked with Fadi rockets around 4 a.m. (0100 GMT). It said it had also attacked the Megiddo airfield near the northern Israeli town of Afula three separate times.
After almost a year of war against Hamas in Gaza on its southern border, Israel is shifting its focus to the northern frontier, where Hezbollah has been firing rockets into Israel in support of Hamas, which is also backed by Iran.
With the region increasingly on edge, over 30 international flights to and from Beirut on Tuesday were cancelled, according to the Rafic Hariri International Airport’s website. Airlines affected included Qatar Airways, Turkish Airways and some from the United Arab Emirates.
Some Lebanese hospitals are overwhelmed by the number of wounded, a World Health Organization official in Lebanon said, and Haifa’s main hospital has moved operations to an underground facility after the Israeli city was attacked on Monday.
“We’re looking at tens of thousands (of displaced in Lebanon), but we expect that those figures will start to rise,” said the U.N. refugee agency’s spokesperson, Matthew Saltmarsh. “The situation is extremely alarming.”
INTERNATIONAL CONCERN
Calls for diplomacy are growing as the conflict worsens, with UN human rights chief Volker Turk urging all states and actors with influence to avert further escalation in Lebanon.
The Kremlin said Israeli strikes on Lebanon could destabilise the Middle East.
Diplomacy has failed to ease hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah dating back decades.
The fighting has raised fears that the United States, Israel’s close ally, and regional power Iran, which has proxies across the Middle East — Hezbollah, Yemen’s Houthis and armed groups in Iraq — will be sucked into a wider war.
The strikes have piled pressure on Hezbollah, which last week suffered heavy losses when thousands of pagers and walkie-talkies used by its members exploded in the worst security breach in its history.
The operation was widely attributed to Israel, which has a long history of sophisticated attacks on foreign soil. It has not confirmed or denied responsibility.
Israel’s intelligence and technological prowess has given it a strong edge in both Lebanon and Gaza. It has tracked down and assassinated top Hezbollah commanders and Hamas leaders.
Israel’s military, the most advanced and powerful in the Middle East, said about 55 projectiles had crossed into Israel in the latest attacks, but the majority were intercepted.
Hezbollah said it had bombed the logistical warehouses of the 146th Division in the Naftali base with a rocket salvo.
FEARS OF REGIONAL INSTABILITY
An all-out war could create instability across the Middle East in addition to a devastating war in Gaza which shows no sign of easing after numerous mediation efforts.
Israel’s potential options could include invading southern Lebanon and further broadening airstrikes to hit more of the Hezbollah-controlled southern suburbs of Beirut or Lebanese infrastructure, including bridges and highways and Beirut airport hit in the 2006 Israel-Hezbollah war.
Lebanon can ill afford such destruction as it is still suffering from a catastrophic financial collapse which its leaders have left to fester for five years.
Hezbollah would likely be a more formidable foe for Israel in a ground invasion than Hamas. Created in 1982 by Iran’s Revolutionary Guards to counter the Israeli invasion of Lebanon, it has vast experience, is highly disciplined and possesses better weaponry than its Palestinian ally.
But Israel’s government faces public pressure to secure its northern border and safely return residents there — a top war priority.
A senior source familiar with Hezbollah thinking said the group was in an unprecedented phase of confrontation and Israel was acting as if it sought to push Hezbollah against the wall. Hezbollah says it does not want a wider war.
Exchanges of fire between Israel and Hezbollah have escalated after almost a year of hostilities that flared last October as the Gaza war erupted.
The latest strikes caused panic.
Families from south Lebanon on Monday loaded cars, vans and trucks with belongings and people young and old. Highways north were gridlocked.
Israel’s military said it struck Hezbollah in Lebanon’s south, east and north on Monday, including rocket launchers, command posts and militant infrastructure. The Israeli Air Force struck about 1,600 Hezbollah targets in southern Lebanon and the Bekaa Valley, it said.
Lebanon’s health ministry said at least 492 people had been killed on Monday, including 35 children, and 1,645 wounded. One Lebanese official said it was Lebanon’s highest daily death toll from violence since the 1975-1990 civil war.
