New Delhi , June 30,2021: The delimitation commission tasked with redrawing parliamentary and assemblies constituencies in Jammu and Kashmir is likely to hold an internal meeting at the Election Commission office in Delhi on Wednesday, said sources.
The meeting would be chaired by Justice Ranjana Desai (Retd), Chief Election Commissioner Sushil Chandra and will be attended by Jammu and Kashmir’s Chief Electoral Officer along with other officials of the poll panel.
The commission is expected to finalise its plans after consultations with political parties soon.
Last week on June 23 the Election Commission held virtual discussions with its representatives in Jammu and Kashmir and deputy commissioners regarding the delimitation of the 90 Assembly constituencies in the Union Territory.
In the meeting, that was attended by 20 deputy commissioners from Jammu and Kashmir, administrative difficulties faced with respect to the assembly constituencies were discussed.
Voters’ adversities regarding assembly constituency that do not have exact geographical delineation were also discussed in the meeting.
This meeting was held a day before Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s all-party meeting with leaders from Jammu and Kashmir where leaders discussed the re-starting of political activity in the Union Territory.
The three-member delimitation commission headed by retired Supreme Court judge Ranjana Prakash Desai was set up in March 2020 for a year. Later, the panel got a one-year extension from the Central government on March 3, 2021, after it failed to complete its task last year.
The Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation Act 2019 notified by the government on August 9, 2019, paved the way for the creation of two Union Territories – Jammu and Kashmir, which will have a legislature and Ladakh, without it.
The Act provides that the number of seats in the legislative assembly of Union Territory of Jammu and Kashmir shall be increased from 107 to 114, and delimitation of the constituencies will be determined by the Election Commission.
Importantly a full meeting of the commission including the associate members’ Lok Sabha MPs from Jammu and Kashmir is likely to take place soon. It is likely that the date for such a meeting will be decided on Wednesday.
Washington, Jun 30,2021: The US House of Representative on Tuesday passed a resolution recognizing the devastating impact of novel coronavirus in India and expressing the sense of the House of Representatives to urgently facilitate assistance.
Congressman Brad Sherman, the Democratic Co-Chair of the House Caucus on India and India Americans, was joined by Rep Steve Chabot (R-OH) in introducing the resolution last month.
“The resolution stands with the people of India as they collectively work to stem the spread of COVID-19,” Mr Sherman said.
“The US must work with our partners around the world to quell the virus everywhere it persists,” he added.
“The resolution recognizes the efforts of the Biden administration to deliver urgently needed medical supplies to India, and urges the delivery of additional, much needed medical supplies and in-kind medical supply donations to help India quell this devastating second wave of COVID-19. The resolution also recognizes the efforts of Indian Americans and American firms to support India’s health care system during this time of need, including the delivery of 1,000 ventilators and 25,000 oxygen concentrators to health care facilities across India,” according to a statement issued by Brad Sherman’s office on Tuesday.
As a senior member of the House Foreign Affairs Committee, as well as the Democratic Co-Chair of the India Caucus, Congressman Sherman has worked, alongside the Republican Co-Chair Steve Chabot, to address the devastating effects of this second COVID-19 wave in India.
In April, Reps Steve Chabot, Ro Khanna, Michael Waltz and others joined Congressman Sherman in formally requesting that the White House increase its assistance for India’s battle against COVID-19. By early May, the United States had provided more than $100 million worth of medical supplies to India, including oxygen support, personal protective equipment (PPE), rapid diagnostic tests, and therapeutics. USAID also facilitated the delivery of 440 oxygen cylinders and regulators to India, donated by the State of California.
Working directly with the Indian Ambassador in Washington D.C., Congressman Sherman along with Congressman Chabot led another letter to President Biden, joined by over 50 Members of Congress, again requesting the White House to further increase aid and provide specific, needed medical equipment to support India through the COVID crisis.
Congressmen Sherman and Chabot also hosted a Member briefing with the State Department, the U.S. Agency for International Development (USAID), Health and Human Services (HHS), and the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) to discuss the United States’ efforts to assist India with their devastating second wave of COVID-19 infections, the statement concluded.

New Delhi, Jun 29,2021: External Affairs Minister Dr S Jaishankar has not met any Taliban leader as claimed by some media reports, sources said here on Tuesday.
As per the reports which are circulating in social media, Dr Jaishankar had met Taliban leaders Mullah Baradar, Khairullah, Sheikh Dilawar and have assured that future relations with India will not be governed by Pakistan’s will.
“We have seen some reports on social media which claim that the External Affairs Minister has met some Taliban leaders. Such reports are completely untrue, baseless and mischievous,” the sources said.
Dr Jaishankar had visited Doha on June 9 and June 15 where he had met with the Qatari Foreign Minister and the National Security Advisor, as well as US Special Representative on Afghanistan reconciliation.
The fast pace developments are taking place against the backdrop of the US President Joe Biden announcing the withdrawal of American troops from the war-torn Afghanistan on September 11, almost 20 years after it attacked the country to eliminate militant organisation Al Qaeda and overthrow Taliban.
The Taliban, which has rejected to recognise the democratically elected Afghanistan government is becoming stronger day-by-day by attacking the Afghanistan forces and now rules over many districts of the country.
The Indian government has so far not recognised the Taliban.
Taliban’s main office is located in Doha since 2013. The Qatar government has organised Intra Afghan Dialogue or Afghan-Taliban talks in September last year which was attended by an Indian delegation led by MEA’s Joint Secretary for Iran-Pakistan-Afghanistan J P Singh.
